Direct Drive shafts are pretty straight forward and can be removed in most cases without special tools.
1) remove the 4 bolts holding coupling to trans coupling
2) remove set screws if used, and or coupling nut inside coupling if it is a tapered shaft end (most since mid 80's)
3) saturate with penetrating oil, place a deep well socket as a spacer between the two couplings, and using 4 temp. longer bolts re-attach the couplings keeping the spacer centered between the output shaft & propshaft. Slowly tighten each bolt until the shaft moves out.

V-Drive boats have a much more difficult scenario due to the compact nature, some are buried under the engine, and newer boats have the "pass through" transmission with the shaft & coupling easily visible behind the trans, but impossible to remove without a special puller.
